Miracle or will? (12 December 2011)

You may have seen the story of Paralympian and World Champion wheelchair cyclist Monique van der Vorst. After being in an accident, she started having sensations in her legs, and eventually was able to walk. Now she is signed up with a new cycling team - this time, an able-bodied one! She is targetting the 2016 Olympics, and is inspiring many people, me included. Her amazing transformation has been described as a miracle - and maybe it is.

But I heard her interviewed on the radio, and it was clear that she progressed literally step by step over many months, grinding her way towards being able to walk with crutches first, then taking things gradually further. The point is that commitment and determination to change and succeed played a key part for Monique - it didn't happen overnight.

So if you want to make change happen in your life, however small, you have to find that commitment. As we coaches say: only YOU can ultimately change your life, by finding that will. Of course, you need to find the right goals too; take a look at Monique's website and you'll see she is a very goal-driven person, like many athletes. Monique walked again - so what are you going to do in 2012?!
